This play of electrifying suspense explores one of the dilemmas of modern urban living: should a law abiding citizen cooperate with the police when he sees a crime committed in which he is not personally involved is it his duty to bear witness?

In a middle class neighborhood of a large city lives widowed Rose Grayson, her son Don, her daughter in law Sally, her infant grandson Garry, and her teenaged daughter Elaine. Rose's husband was a police captain who died a hero's death fighting crime and she is embittered against the society that permitted that to happen

When Sally witnesses a brutal gangland murder, Rose strongly urges her to keep silent and not meddle in matters that don't concern her. But Sally can identify the killer as Elaine's current boyfriend and Don urges her to do so

The decision Sally makes results in a harrowing ordeal for the Graysons, culminating in a climax of almost unbearable excitement
