Set in the summer of 1930 in Harlem before the creative energy of the Harlem Renaissance is suffocated by the Depression. The rich collection of characters includes young Reverend Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., feeding the hungry and preaching an activist gospel - Black Nationalist visionary, Marcus Garvey, about to be discredited and deported - birth control pioneer, Margaret Sanger, who provide a backdrop to the lives of costume designer Guy and his friend, Angel, a recently fired Cotton Club back-up singer
