On Ida's eighty-sixth birthday - an age she would rather not have reached - the family gather for tea. After tea has been cleared the family disperse leaving Katherine remembering the pact she made with Ida not to let her suffer into old age. Helping Ida out of her misery, Katherine feels she has done the right thing, but when the family learns of the mercy-killing they proceed to demonstrate a spectrum of English mores at their hilarious worst.
