2 Male 5 Female

Laura is 18, retarded, and about to make the difficult transition between life in a sheltered day-care facility and community living with her family

For Laura, the day-care facility seems more like home, and at first she cries out to return there, but with the help of her sister Carey, both she and the family begin taking the first steps toward adjustment

All goes well until one afternoon when Carey brings home friends, Donna and Jerry, from school

Jerry is immediately attracted by Laura's innocence, and when briefly alone with her, tries to kiss her

Carey is appalled at Jerry's behavior, but more than that, heartsick because of her sister's vulnerability

Then, a few days later, Laura doesn't arrive home on time from her job at a workshop

When Laura finally does return home, tired and confused, but safe, her mother decides that it would be safer for her to remain at home - and gradually, Laura slips away into her own world, withdrawn and childlike

Absorbing, eloquent drama
