In 1954, the artist Graham Sutherland is commissioned by Parliament to paint a portrait of Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, to be presented to him on his 80th Birthday

What Sutherland sees, however, is very much at odds with Churchill's vision

Although accepted by the subject, the painting is subsequently hidden away and destroyed

Based on true events, The Portrait, looks at the nature of art and its destruction

On the divergent opinions of the artist and the sitter

And how the public images produced of a political figure was and still is so important to them
