The legend in the girl's town says that when presented the right gift, the Christ Child in the church's creche will smile and the bells will ring again!
However, year after year, at Christmas, the entire town arrives at the church to present their gifts to no avail
The little girl has worked ceaselessly on a beautifully embroidered shawl for the Christ Child, but being selfless, the little girl gives away her shawl to a needy old woman
In return, the old woman gives her a singing bird.
But soon, the girl finds a man who misses the song of birds and she gives him her bird
In exchange, the man gives her a clock with no hands. Soon, she runs across a blind man and she gives him the clock to help him sleep at night
In exchange, she ends up with a battered wood carving of a lamb
The little girl and everyone else in the town are expecting that a royal prince will set down a most beautiful and expensive present that will end the silence of the bells
But when his gift is placed at the foot of the creche and the lips on the Christ Child remains sad, everyone begins to leave
But there is still one last gift to be given ...
REVIEWS
"A great story and nice music assembled into an easy production package that makes it a lot of fun to do. 'The Silent Bells' is a classic story the perfect choice for a holiday play or even just a Christmas get-together reading. The songs are easy enough to be mastered by any age and, yet, have a level of interest to captivate the most demanding of audiences. I would encourage anyone to take this on as an added bonus to the holiday season" ~ Stephen Lowry, Director, INCAP Theatre
